Belichick discusses UNC career interest

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Bill Belichick gave an update on his interest in the open head coaching position at North Carolina.

The legendary former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion confirmed that he discussed the head coaching job at North Carolina and had “a few good conversations” with UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts.

The 72-year-old Belichick, one of the best coaches in NFL history, has not played a professional career for a year.

Although he never coached in college, Belichick grew up playing the college game. His father, Steve, was an assistant coach at UNC for three years before spending more than three decades as an assistant at Navy.

“I had the opportunity this year to look at college football from a draft perspective longer during the college season than I did in the spring, and it was interesting, and I was able to keep up with pro football as well,” Belichick said. “So it was a good year for me. I learned a lot. I had the opportunity to speak with Chancellor Roberts and we had some good conversations, so we’ll see where things go.”

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Belichick had a five-hour meeting with North Carolina officials on Sunday.

McAfee asked Belichick about that interview, and he declined to comment on the details.

“I don’t want to give away too much information. “I want to keep the aura of my press conference,” Belichick joked.

ESPN has reported that “one way or another” in talks between Belichick and UNC is expected this week.

Belichick discussed what it would look like if he took a college coaching job, saying the program’s structure was like “an NFL program, but not at the NFL level.”

“Let me write this in all caps. “If – IF – I were to go to a college program, the college program would be a connection to the NFL for the players who would have the opportunity to play in the NFL,” Belichick said. “It would be a professional program – training, nutrition, programming, coaching, techniques that would translate to the NFL.” It would be a college-level NFL program and an education that would prepare players for their post-football careers , be it the end of their college career or the end of their professional career.

“But it would be focused on player development, time management, discipline, structure and all of that, those would be life skills regardless of whether they’re in the NFL or somewhere in business. I am very confident that I have the contacts in the National Football League to pave the way for players to have the opportunity to compete in the National Football League. I don’t know whether they are good enough or not. But they would be willing, I have no doubt about that.”
