Beloved former First Coast News anchor Mark Spain dies after battling cancer

Spain will be remembered as a great journalist and an even better person. He anchored news on the First Coast for 14 years.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With a heavy heart First coastal news reports: Mark Spain, our beloved former host who told Jacksonville’s stories for 14 years, has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Spain spent 14 years on local news in Jacksonville starting in 2000. He then joined the news team at ABC 13 in Lynchburg, Virginia in 2015, where he served as lead anchor of the evening and late-night shows.

“It gives us comfort to know that he is no longer suffering…God is walking alongside us,” Mark’s wife, Lynita Spain, told ABC 13.

She also posted the following on Facebook:

“It’s surreal that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three weeks ago exactly yesterday. He stayed positive throughout the fight and wasn’t afraid.”

According to the ABC 13 team, Spain began his news career as a paperboy for the Cleveland Press when he was just 9 years old. He continued that career after majoring in communications, earning awards such as Best News Anchor by the Association Press of the Virginias in 2018 and 2019.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Mark’s passing. He always worked to improve the First Coast in every story he produced,” he said First coastal news Managing Director Tim Thomas. “Our thoughts are with his wife Lynita and his three children during this difficult time.”
