Beluga Whale Adorably Responds to Proposal at Georgia Aquarium (Exclusive)

A beluga whale has gone viral for its adorable reaction to a marriage proposal near its aquarium.

Thanks to a 16-year-old female beluga whale named Qinu, Olivia Walsh and Gavin Hulberg’s engagement at the Georgia Aquarium on Wednesday, December 18 will be a moment they will treasure forever.

“The most perfect proposal I could have asked for 🥹🩷,” Walsh captioned her proposal video on TikTok, which currently has more than 7 million views and 2 million likes.

In the video, Walsh and Hulberg pose for a photo in front of the beluga whale exhibit when Hulberg suddenly gets down on one knee to propose, causing viewers to gasp and burst into “aahs.” Even Qinu looked just as surprised – her jaw dropped just as Hulberg pulled out a diamond engagement ring.

Aquarium visitors began to cheer as Walsh covered her face in shock. After saying “yes,” she hugged her fiancé tightly while Qinu appeared to smile in the background before turning and swimming away.

In her caption, the bride-to-be said she has been an intern training beluga whales for three months. Her manager tells PEOPLE exclusively that Hulberg reached out to another member of the beluga whale training team to “help figure out something special for her.”

“As an intern training beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium, there is a lot to teach the animals to participate in their own voluntary health care, research, guest programs, and mental and physical stimulation. There are currently five beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium and training is done with all of them!” Katie Lorenz, assistant curator of mammals and birds and a mammal and bird intern at the Georgia Aquarium, tells PEOPLE.

She further notes, “Qinu’s behavior at the window was her own – she was not intentionally trained to have any kind of ‘reaction.'”

Commenters on TikTok loved Qinu’s sincere, heartfelt reaction and shocked expression at the suggestion.

“Beluga needs to be invited to the wedding 🥹,” the official Play-Doh account commented under the video.

“The beluga MUST be officiating the wedding now,” someone else wrote, and another TikToker added, “The beluga must be a bridesmaid at this point.”

Similar offers were already available at the aquarium, but only for employees. To see Qinu and other cute beluga whales, visit the Georgia Aquarium or watch the live beluga whale webcam. Fans can also follow @GeorgiaAquarium on TikTok and Instagram for more behind-the-scenes moments.
