Ben Roethlisberger criticizes NFL over impact of Christmas schedule on players

Ben Roethlisberger criticized the NFL for the importance of its Christmas games to teams’ schedules.

His former Steelers team will host the Chiefs on Wednesday, marking the team’s third game in 11 days.

“It’s miserable,” Roethlisberger said on his podcast “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger.” “…It’s a shame that the league is doing this. It just shows that it’s all about money and this is a way for them to make more money and sort this thing out because it’s not fair to the players.”

The Steelers lost to the Eagles on December 15th and then lost to the Ravens this past Saturday.

They will return to the field just four days after the loss in Baltimore.

“You want to talk about injuries and make the game safer, change the kickoff rule and prevent guys from making hip drop tackles, concussions and this and the other, but you’re going to make sure guys have the most violent game in the world “World, probably three games in (11) days,” said Roethlisberger. “I mean, your body doesn’t have time to heal and rest.”

“If you go from a Saturday to a Wednesday, your body won’t recover quickly enough,” Roethlisberger said. “And now you’re asking these boys to go out and play and beat each other up and that’s a disgrace. It’s obviously a money thing for the NFL. And I know I’ll be watching, people will be watching, so they get what they want.

“I feel sorry for the players. During the holidays you also want to be at home with your family. This is hard.”

Jerry Jones, the influential owner of the Cowboys, recently suggested that the NFL plans to play games on Christmas every year, regardless of what day of the week it falls on.

“Christmas Day is Christmas Day, and you don’t wait for the day it is,” Jones said in a radio interview. “We want to be there on Christmas Day. “I think the future is, no matter what day it is, we will be there at Christmas.”
