Beth kills Jamie when Rainwater buys the ranch

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 14, “Life Is a Promise,” which premiered Sunday, December 15, on Paramount Network.

Even though Paramount Network isn’t calling it a series finale, Sunday’s “Yellowstone” episode certainly felt like the end of the series that fans have known for five seasons.

After nearly everything at the ranch sold out last week, the show’s wandering souls fell by the wayside.

There were a few goodbyes early on as Jimmy (Jefferson White), Mia (Eden Brolin) and Travis (Taylor Sheridan) returned home to the 6666 in Texas and Teeter (Jen Landon) promised to stop by in a week looking for work. Walker (Ryan Bingham) says he will follow his rodeo champion girlfriend around the track. Beth reveals that she has bought a ranch outside of Dillion – far from tourists and airports – to live with Rip. Rip offers Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) a job at their new ranch, but he declines, saying he needs to find himself.

Meanwhile, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) prepare for the funeral of their father John Dutton (Kevin Costner). At the same time, Kayce (Luke Grimes) tells Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) about his plan from the end of the last episode, specifically to have the Broken Rock Reservation purchase the Yellowstone for $1.25 per acre since it was sold to them Originally Duttons.

It’s a nice moment, as Chief Rainwater and John Dutton have always been the men most concerned with keeping the country intact, and given that their conflicts in the past have always been mild, it’s a sensible partnership . Additionally, Kayce makes a deal with Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate (Brecken Merrill) to keep his small ranch, which is a nice touch.

Cut to everyone at the ranch preparing for John’s funeral – and the metaphorical funeral of Yellowstone itself. Jamie (Wes Bentley) spends the time preparing to lead an investigation into the murders of John and Sarah (Dawn Olivieri). will initiate in the hope of avoiding any potential political repercussions as discussed in the previous episode.

The funeral was elegant and small, Beth promised retribution for John’s coffin, and then Rip buried him himself, saying he would take care of Beth. Of course, right afterward, Beth speeds off in her car, armed with bear spray and a big ol’ knife.

After sneaking up on Jamie at his house, Beth and her estranged brother have a bloody, devastating brawl. It looks like Jamie is about to strangle Beth, but Rip interrupts him, grabs him, and frees Beth to inflict a fatal stab wound on Jamie. Farewell, Jamie – your scheming always kept things interesting!

Rip and Lloyd take another trip to the train station with Jamie’s body, while Beth promises to work with the police to link him to the murders of John and Sarah.

Towards the end, cowboy Ryan (Ian Bohen) apologizes to country star Abby (Lainey Wilson) and sets off with her to live out her life on the road. Rip walks through the empty ranch grounds and closes the sleeping cabin door while Beth and Kayce once again inspect the large, empty main house.

At the end of the episode, the tribe takes over the land and begins removing the Dutton signage while preserving the cemetery. The final voiceover is from Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), her ancestor who appeared in the prequel series “1883” and “1923,” as Kayce’s family begins ranching on their own terms, as do Rip and Carter ( Finn Little) on her land Beth.

As for the future of the show? Just this week, Reilly and Hauser signed on for a new spin-off of the series, so it’s clear that Yellowstone will return – albeit in a different capacity.

Happy trails, “Yellowstone” fans!
