Beyoncé defies “Cowboy Carter” skeptics with a unifying Netflix holiday halftime appearance

Beyoncé defies “Cowboy Carter” skeptics with a unifying Netflix holiday halftime appearance

Beyoncé’s country crossover wasn’t welcomed by everyone at first, but it united audiences across the country during the NFL Christmas Halftime Show on Netflix.

The singer performed 12 minutes of songs, mostly from her album, at NRG Stadium in her hometown of Houston Cowboy Carter. Before releasing the project in March, she wrote on Instagram that it “came out of an experience I had years ago where I felt unwelcome.” This led her to delve deeper into country music.

The album’s first single, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” topped the Hot Country Songs chart, making her the first black woman ever to receive that honor. A radio station refused to play the song, and in response, a petition to get her songs played on country radio garnered 28,000 signatures within a month.

Although Beyoncé’s songs are popular in some country bars and are part of the Western resurgence, she received no nominations for November’s Country Music Association awards show. The establishment may not accept her, but her audience will.

Beyoncé was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards this year – the most of any artist. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Although viewing figures for their halftime show have not yet been announced, it was well received online and brought people together on Christmas Day.

Netflix’s Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match in November was plagued by a series of technical problems, dealing a major blow to the reputation of the streamer’s biggest live event ever. Technical issues during NFL Christmas games appeared to be minimal, although the games themselves were also somewhat lackluster.

Streams appeared to remain steady during Beyoncé’s moment. She performed several songs live for the first time, from “16 Carriages” to “Levii’s Jeans,” and brought special guests Shaboozey and Post Malone, who also performed Cowboy Carter. She also danced alongside her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

Beyoncé’s halftime show is not currently available to rewatch, but Netflix announced that the show will stream as a standalone special “later this week.” The singer herself has hinted that something big is coming on January 14th, but it’s not clear whether it will be a music video, a tour or another album.
