Biden admin announces $4.28 billion more in student loans

The Biden administration announced an additional $4.28 billion in student loans as President Biden and Vice President Harris prepare to leave the White House.

The extensive lending will exempt 54,900 state employees from lending.

“Four years ago, the Biden-Harris Administration promised America’s teachers, military personnel, nurses, first responders and other public servants that we would fix the broken Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and I am proud to say we have delivered “ Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a press release on Friday.

The action brings the total loan forgiveness approved by Biden to nearly $180 billion for nearly 5 million borrowers.

“By approving an additional $4.28 billion in loan forgiveness for nearly 55,000 public servants, the administration has secured life-changing student debt relief of nearly $180 billion for nearly five million borrowers,” Cardona said. “The U.S. Department of Education’s successful transformation of the PSLF program is a testament to what is possible when you have leaders like President Biden and Vice President Harris who are relentlessly and uncompromisingly focused on making government deliver for everyday working people .”

The Biden-Harris administration touted the program as an “incentive” for civil servants to “pursue and maintain” their careers by forgiving borrowers’ balance after they make the 120 qualifying monthly payments.

“The relief announced today includes both borrowers who benefited from the administration’s limited PSLF waiver, a temporary opportunity that ended in October 2022, and regulatory improvements made to the program during this administration,” it said the press release.

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden promised to forgive student loans for millions of Americans if elected, but the president has faced constant legal hurdles as he tries to eliminate hundreds of billions of dollars in debt.

After The Supreme Court blocked the Biden administration’s decision After the president and his team made the first attempt to provide broad student loan forgiveness, they decided that it was an overreach of the executive branch’s constitutional powers and began considering other options for granting handouts work.

President-elect Trump has not said specifically how he will approach the Biden administration’s plans for student loan forgiveness, but he has said he plans to overhaul the entire education system during his term.
