Biden gives federal employees Christmas Eve off

While budget negotiations in Congress remained in disarray early Thursday ahead of Friday’s funding deadline, at least one thing was certain for federal workers: Dec. 24 will be a holiday this year.

President Biden issued an executive order Thursday closing federal agencies and offices the day before Christmas and granting a day off for federal employees, except those who hold positions of “national security, defense, or other public need.”

The order, which employees expect to receive around mid-December each year, marks the first time in its single term that the Biden administration has closed federal agencies on Christmas Eve.

Ironically, the last time federal employees had the entire day off on December 24th was in 2020, when President-elect Trump was in the final year of his first term.

In 2018 and 2019, Trump also closed agencies on Christmas Eve, defying a previous tradition in which presidents gave federal employees only half a day on December 24th.

During Biden’s term, Christmas Eve fell on a weekday only one other time, and in 2021 it fell on a Friday.

The order comes as Congress seeks to restart an emergency funding bill to prevent the federal government from shutting down on Saturday, following a proposed three-month rolling resolution plan on Wednesday amid criticism from Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance had failed.
