Biden is giving most federal employees a day off on Christmas Eve

Federal agencies will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, President Joe Biden announced, giving federal workers an extra day off the day before Christmas.

The president made the announcement via an executive order that he signed on Thursday.

“All executive departments and agencies of the federal government will be closed and their employees relieved of duty on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, the day before Christmas,” the order states.

There is no guarantee that presidents will give federal employees additional time off around Christmas.

Christmas Day is a federal holiday, but December 24th is not. The decision rests with the president, and everyone has handled it differently.

Despite the order, some federal employees will still report to work on December 24th.

“The heads of executive departments and agencies may, for national security, defense or other reasons, determine that certain offices and facilities of their organizations or parts thereof must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2024. “Public need,” says the executive order.

President-elect Donald Trump gave federal workers an additional day off for Christmas Eve in his first term in 2020, 2019 and 2018.

In 2014, former President Barack Obama gave federal employees a day off on Friday, December 26th. In 2012, he gave his employees a day off on Monday, December 24th. Former President George W. Bush gave federal employees a day off on Monday, December 24, missing both 2007 and 2001.
