President Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden after the first son was convicted in two separate federal cases earlier this year.

The announcement was made by the White House on Sunday evening.

“Today I signed a pardon for my son Hunter,” Biden wrote in a statement. “From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere in the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I have kept my word, even as I watched my son be selectively and unfairly prosecuted became.”

“Without aggravating factors such as use in a crime, multiple purchases, or purchasing a gun as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial for a crime simply because they filled out a gun form,” the statement continued. “Those who paid their taxes late because of serious addiction, but then repaid them with interest and penalties, generally receive non-criminal solutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.”

Hunter Biden, 54, has had a busy year in court, beginning his first trial in June in Delaware when he was charged with three felony weapons offenses before pleading guilty to felony charges in a separate tax case in September.

President Biden’s pardon of his son represents a departure from his previous statements to the media over the summer in which he stated he would not pardon the first son.

“Yes,” President Biden told ABC News when asked if he would rule out pardoning Hunter before his guilty verdict in the gun case.

Days later, after a jury of Hunter’s colleagues found him guilty of three serious weapons offenses, the president again said he would not pardon his son.

“I’m not going to do anything,” Biden said after Hunter’s sentencing. “I will support the jury’s decision.”

In the gun case, Hunter was found guilty of making a false statement when purchasing a gun, making a false statement regarding information required to be maintained by a federally licensed gun dealer, and possession of a gun by a person who a firearms dealer is unlawful use of or dependence on a controlled substance.

In particular, prosecutors worked to prove that Biden lied in October 2018 on a federal firearms form known as ATF Form 4473 when he checked a box when asked whether he was using substances illegally or addicted to controlled substances marked “No”.

Hunter has a well-documented one History of drug abusewhich was most notably documented in his 2021 memoir “Beautiful Things,” in which he walked readers through his former need to smoke crack cocaine every 20 minutes and how his addiction became so pronounced that he referred to himself as “Crack daddy” for drugs referred to dealers and anecdotes surrounding drug deals, such as a crack dealer from Washington, D.C., whom Biden nicknamed “Bicycles.”

Hunter’s lawyers did not dispute during the trial that the first son had a long history of drug abuse, which included alcohol addiction. The defense instead argued that Biden did not consider himself an active drug addict the day he purchased the Cobra Colt .38, citing the first son’s stint in rehab before the purchase in October 2018.

But prosecutors argued that Biden was addicted to crack cocaine before, during and after purchasing the pistol. Just a day after the gun purchase, prosecutors showed the court that Biden texted Hallie Biden, his sister-in-law and now girlfriend, telling her that he was “waiting for a dealer named Mookie.” A day after that text message, he wrote that he was “sleeping on a car and smoking crack.” 4th Street and Rodney” in Wilmington.

A jury deliberated for about three hours over two days before finding Hunter guilty on every count.

Hunter was scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 13, which was delayed until December before his father intervened.

After President Biden withdrew from the presidential campaign in July due to increasing concerns about his mental capacity and age, Hunter faced another trial on three tax offenses and six tax offenses for failure to pay taxes on at least $1.4 million.

As jury selection was about to begin in federal court in Los Angeles, Hunter made a surprise guilty plea.

“I will not subject my family to more pain, further invasion of privacy and unnecessary embarrassment,” Hunter said in an emailed statement at the time. “Despite everything I have done to them over the years, I can spare them this and that is why I have decided to plead guilty.”

The charge carried up to 17 years behind bars, but the first son likely would have faced a much shorter sentence under federal sentencing guidelines. His sentencing was scheduled for December 16.

Before the president’s decision to pardon his son, President-elect Donald Trump said on the campaign trail that he would consider pardoning Hunter if he was victorious on November 5.

“I wouldn’t take it off the books,” Trump told radio host Hugh Hewitt in October. “Look, unlike Joe Biden, despite everything they did to me, they acted so viciously against me… And Hunter is a bad boy.”

“No question. He was a bad boy,” Trump continued. “But I happen to think it’s very bad for our country.”
