Biden touts successes while critics and approval ratings say otherwise

President Biden delivered his farewell address Wednesday evening at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.

The 46th president began his speech by referring to the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement “developed and negotiated” by his administration.

This deal was a major diplomatic victory for Biden as his presidency comes to an end in the next few days.

“This plan was developed and negotiated by my team and will be widely implemented by the new administration,” Biden said. “That’s why I told my team to fully inform the new administration. Because that’s what it should be like to work together as Americans.”

During his speech, Biden claimed he led Americans through “one of the toughest times in our country’s history.”

“Every day I kept my promise to be president for all Americans during one of the most difficult times in our country’s history,” he said.

Biden also discussed some of his legislative achievements during his four years in office, including investments in infrastructure, manufacturing and veterans’ health.

“It will take time before we feel the full impact of everything we have done together,” Biden said. “But the seeds have been planted. And they will continue to grow and bloom for decades to come.”

As Biden leaves office, he leaves with a low approval rating, with only a third of Americans believing the country is on the right track.

“His approval rating is 37%. I think this is a near historic low for him in our polls,” said Matt Taglia, executive director of Emerson College Polling, which released a new national poll Tuesday.

In September 2024, Biden released a statement saying that “Americans are safer than when we took office” and that violent crime in America had fallen “to its lowest level in nearly 50 years.”

A report from “Full Measure, with Sharyl Attkisson” showed that the FBI misreported crime data from 2022 and then had to readjust the numbers after public outcry.

The report found that the FBI quietly revised its 2022 numbers from a 2.1% drop in violent crime to a 4.5% increase, for an overall increase of 6.6%. This includes 80,000 violent crimes that were not counted: 33,000 more robberies, 37,000 more aggravated assaults, 7,000 more rapes and 1,700 more murders.

According to CNN, Biden is leaving office with an approval rating that is the lowest it has ever been during his presidential term, and Americans are viewing his presidency as a failure rather than a success.
