Biden warns in his farewell speech: “Oligarchy is taking shape in America.”

The president delivered a grim message that “extreme wealth, power and influence” threatens the country’s democracy

President Joe Biden delivered his farewell address at the White House on Wednesday, marking the final time he addressed Americans from the Oval Office.

“Over the last four years, our democracy has held strong, and every day I have remained true to my commitment to be president for all Americans during one of the most difficult times in our country’s history,” Biden said from behind the Resolute desk. “I had a great partner, Vice President Kamala Harris.”

While the president looked back on his long political career and said he was proud of what his administration has accomplished in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and its progress in combating climate change, he also issued a warning as President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his return to the White House.

“Today, an oligarchy of extreme wealth, power and influence is taking shape in America, threatening literally our entire democracy, our fundamental rights and freedoms, and offering everyone a fair chance to get ahead,” he said.

The address came hours after Israel and Hamas agreed on the framework of a ceasefire that would end the 15-month war that has devastated the Middle East. Biden and his administration have faced widespread criticism for providing military aid to Israel, whose attacks on Gaza have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians. The conflict began when Hamas staged a terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, killing 1,195 Israelis. Hundreds more were taken hostage. Biden said in a statement after news of the ceasefire broke that “we are committed to bringing all (Gaza hostages) home under the agreement.”

Biden’s address comes a few days before Donald Trump is scheduled to be sworn in as president on January 20th. Biden initially sought re-election against Trump, but dropped out of the race last summer after a disastrous performance during a debate against Trump on June 27 and calls within the Democratic party for his resignation. Trump then defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, who took Biden’s place in the race.
