Big Green retains Granite State bragging rights in 69-65 win over UNH

DURHAM, N.H Ryan Cornish Scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Dartmouth men’s basketball team defeated the University of New Hampshire 69-65 at Lundholm Gymnasium on Tuesday night to maintain state supremacy.

Four other Big Green players scored in double figures; Brandon Mitchell Day, Cade Haskins, Jayden WilliamsAnd Romeo Myrthil.

The Big Green’s record improves to 4-3 (0-0 Ivy League) and New Hampshire’s record drops to 2-10 (0-0 America East).

FIRST HALF:

  • Dartmouth went on an early 8-0 run, with Cornish scoring six of them, to take a 17-10 lead with 12:38 left in the half.
  • Six quick points for UNH pushed the Dartmouth lead to 25-17 and forced a Big Green timeout before the second media timeout.
  • After the timeout, the Wildcats scored ten points over the Big Green, closing Dartmouth’s lead to one, 28-27, with 1:17 left in the half.
  • A buzzer-beater three-pointer from Sami Pissis tied the game at 32-32 before halftime.

SECOND HALF:

  • Dartmouth opened the half with another 8-0 run, with Haskins scoring six points to give the Big Green a 40-34 lead.
  • With 12:51 left in the half, three unanswered baskets from beyond the arc on four possessions gave the Big Green a 51-38 lead.
  • The Wildcats responded with a 10-2 run of their own, closing the deficit to six, 58-52, heading into the media timeout under 8:00.
  • Three three-point baskets and a jumper from UNH’s Pissis and Anthony McComb III brought the Wildcats within two points, 67-65, with 1:07 left.
  • Two free throws from Cornish with 20 seconds left secured Dartmouth the win, 69-65.

WITHIN THE NUMBERS:

  • Dartmouth had five steals throughout the game, which led to 11 fast break points.
  • The Big Green led 36-34 of the game.
  • Dartmouth had 11 offensive rebounds compared to eight at UNH.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The all-time series between New Hampshire’s only D1 basketball programs is now 36-36.
  • Dartmouth has now won two consecutive meetings with the UNH Wildcats. This is the first time since the 1991–92 and 1992–93 seasons that the Big Green have defeated the Wildcats in back-to-back seasons.
