Big Ten teams in the latest College Football Playoff Top 25 poll

After weeks and even months of intense debate and endless predictions, a 12-team College Football Playoff roster will be announced at the end of the day — but don’t expect this intense debate to end just because of that.

On Sunday, the playoff selection committee will release its final rankings for the 2024 college football season based on the results of the various conference championship games played on Friday and Saturday.

For the Big Ten, the newly expanded and recently reconfigured 18-team conference is expected to see several of its teams among the dozens of squads that have the opportunity to compete for a national championship.

After its 45-37 win over Penn State in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis on Saturday night, Oregon is widely considered the top seed in the playoff field and the only undefeated team in the FBS. The Nittany Lions are also sure to be there despite the loss to the Ducks. The same thought applies to both Ohio State and Indiana, which were in the top 10 in the committee’s most recent rankings from last Tuesday.

When will the CFP rankings be released?

Date: Sunday, December 8th
Start time: Noon ET

The CFP rankings reveal show begins at noon ET on Sunday, December 8th and runs until 4:00 p.m. Despite the long duration of the broadcast, the playoff round is usually announced early in the show.

How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

After existing as a four-team unit for 10 years since its debut at the end of the 2014 season, the playoffs have tripled in size since this season, now allowing 12 teams to compete for a national championship.

The five highest-rated conference champions participate in the playoffs, with the top four of those teams receiving a first-round bye and automatically advancing to the national quarterfinals. The seven remaining teams are at-large selections that will earn a spot based on the playoff selection committee’s rankings.

First-round games will be played at the higher seeded teams’ chosen venue – almost certainly their on-campus venue – before matches move to neutral venues the rest of the way, starting in the quarterfinals.
