Bill Belichick is considering an offer to become the next coach at North Carolina, four people briefed on the situation said The athletic one on Tuesday.

An agreement has not yet been reached and terms are still being negotiated, the sources said. Although an agreement could still be reached quickly, sources warned that nothing was imminent and the sides remained at odds on several key issues. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because conversations between the 72-year-old Belichick and the ACC school have not been made public.

The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach said Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he has had discussions with UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts about filling the vacancy since the school fired Mack Brown days before The regular season is open to finals.

During his 24 seasons with the Patriots, Belichick won six championships alongside Tom Brady at quarterback, a run that made Belichick one of the NFL’s most decorated coaches. He has 333 wins, including regular season and playoff games, and is 14 wins away from tying Don Shula for the NFL career record as a head coach.

Belichick has worked in the media since leaving New England, but it has long been clear that he wanted to coach again. But a move to UNC would be his first ever college coaching position. He spent time in college football this year at Washington, where his son Steve Belichick joined the Huskies as defensive coordinator under first-year head coach Jedd Fisch.

This is a developing story. More will follow.
