Billie Eilish is back for another round with Vanity Fair

In 2017 Vanity Fair approached the rising star Billie Eilish, with an unusual suggestion for a so-called time capsule interview. On October 18 of that year, a blue-haired 16-year-old walked into a studio in Los Angeles and answered questions about her life, her growing social media following, her relationship with her family, and her hopes for the future that would follow her earlier viral hit “Ocean Eyes.”

When Eilish returned for the eighth meeting in October 2024, she recalled that the original invitation was received with some hesitation. “Think about when the idea first came to you! I remember they said, ‘Yeah, they want to do this interview,'” Eilish says. “Then maybe in a year – about Perhaps– they’re going to do another one.” Over the next 12 months, her career began its stratospheric rise, and of course we were more than interested in catching a glimpse of the singer growing up before our eyes.

Soon Eilish had won the Grammys, sold out venues around the world, and released several platinum records, and our annual interview became a tradition. Across seven years and almost as many hair colors, Eilish has spoken about her fans, her creative process, and the ups and downs of her relationships. And now she’s back to reveal a little more.

Although VF did not publish an interview with Eilish in 2023, the “What Was I Made For?” singer sat for one. And on December 18th you’ll see excerpts from this never-before-seen interview in this year’s video. “I can’t believe where my life has gone and where it is now,” she says with a laugh. “I mean, it’s the craziest thing in the world!”
