Billy Napier calls Florida’s flag placement on FSU logo ’embarrassing’

Florida coach Billy Napier apologized and announced consequences after his players celebrated their road win against rival Florida State on Saturday night by placing a Gators flag on the Seminoles logo at midfield.

A scuffle broke out between the teams after Florida’s edge rusher George Gumbs Jr. ran to the logo and raised the flag after Florida’s 31-11 win, negating an impressive performance that gave Napier his first win over the Seminoles in three attempts.

“Obviously what happened there at the end of the game is not where we want to be as a program,” Napier said. “It’s embarrassing and distracts from a really well-played football game. I would like to apologize on behalf of the entire organization for representing the university there. We shouldn’t have done that. We won.” If we don’t do that, there will be consequences for everyone involved.

In a video of the incident, Seminoles coach Mike Norvell was seen snatching the flag from a Florida player. Norvell said he spoke to Napier about the incident after the postgame handshake.

“I told him what I thought,” Norvell said. “They won the game. You have the right to celebrate, just like we have in years past. It was just the way we operate. And that’s okay; If you want to come and do that, that’s absolutely a decision you can make within a team.”

Florida (7-5), which started the season 3-3, put together an impressive performance at the end of November, defeating ranked opponents LSU and Ole Miss before defeating the Seminoles (2-10) on Saturday .
