Billy Napier reacts to the Florida Gators raising the flag after their win

The Florida Gators’ victory over rival Florida State ended in a violent upset. Gators forward George Gumbs Jr. wanted to plant his flag in the middle of FSU’s field. He succeeded, but there was unrest between both teams.

During the altercation, FSU head coach Mike Norvell got in the face of Florida head coach Billy Napier and then pulled the flag out of the ground and threw it.

Regardless of one’s personal opinion on the decision to fly the flag, Napier was not in favor of it – at least not publicly.

After the game, he apologized for what happened on the field.

“Before we get started here, it’s obvious that what happened there at the end of the game is not where we want to be as a program, okay?” Napier said. “And it’s embarrassing and distracts from a really well-played game of football, right? So I would like to apologize on behalf of the entire organization, especially for the way we represented the university there. We shouldn’t have done that. We will no longer do that in the future and that will have consequences for everyone involved.”

If it’s just Norvell’s excitement about it, then Napier probably won’t say anything.

But something that’s not uncommon across college football caused some problems — particularly during this year’s rivalry week. So it’s understandable why Napier went out there and said what he did.

After defeating Ohio State in Columbus, Michigan attempted to plant its flag, which resulted in a brawl. Two players were sprayed with pepper spray.

The same thing happened at the end of the NC-State-UNC game. The Wolf Pack was trying to plant its flag, and the Tar Heels were going to let it happen.

If a new flag flying rule comes into effect next season, it shouldn’t surprise anyone in the least.

Even if that’s the case, the Gators have found more ways to get back at the Seminoles after the rumble. They walked into the end zone and began dancing, using their cleats to rip the end zone open as much as possible.

Napier will probably let this pass.
