Bitcoin hits $100,000. When is the best time to buy cryptocurrencies?

What does this mean for the average investor after Bitcoin surpasses $100,000? Is there still time to join Bitcoin’s run, or have outsiders missed the party?

According to Investopedia, Bitcoin was considered the first successful cryptocurrency and was valued at zero when it was launched in 2009. The digital currency has doubled in value throughout 2024, hitting record highs as it neared $100,000 last month and surpassing that milestone for the first time on Thursday.

Expectations that a second Trump administration will create a favorable regulatory environment for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has fueled the rally. The latest sign is Trump’s choice to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission: Paul Atkins, a crypto-friendly financier and former SEC member.

With all of this momentum, investors are probably wondering whether it’s time to buy into Bitcoin.

“The current impressive surge will inevitably generate new interest and some degree of FOMO (fear of missing out),” said Nigel Green, CEO of global financial advisory firm deVere Group, in an email exchange with USA TODAY.

Regardless of whether you’ve already invested in Bitcoin, it’s safe to say that “Bitcoin is now undeniably a globally established, legitimate asset class, as evidenced by increasing institutional interest,” Green said.

And you can invest – even if it’s just a few euros. Here’s how.

Should I Invest When Bitcoin Reaches $100,000?

Bitcoin had a roller coaster ride of a day, breaking above $103,000, then falling below $96,000 – and was up about 113% for the year as of late Thursday afternoon.
