Blade Runner spinoff reaches important milestone after months of silence

Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner from 1982 is a sci-fi classic, and it’s no wonder there was a sequel in 2017 directed by Denis Villeneuve titled ” Blade Runner 2049. But now the fans can rejoice Blade Runner 2099a spin-off set many years after the second film. There was no news for some time about the production, which was initially announced for 2022. But the wait is now over as filming is officially over. Filming took place in the Czech Republic and Spain. Due to the writers’ strike, the film was also delayed and the location was changed. Now that it’s complete, it’s finally time to get excited and start building the hype.

The story takes place approximately 50 years after the events of the second film, which starred Ryan Gosling. Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant nearing the end of her life, while Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a chameleon forced to live on the run due to constantly changing identities. The two are destined to join forces and find themselves caught up in a conspiracy that involves existential risks.

The aim of the new series is to delve deeper into the complexity of a world driven by technology, to also deal with existential questions and to offer a new perspective on them Blade Runner Universe. The plot explores the dynamic between humans and replicants, focusing on their emotional struggles and the unique challenges they face. According to executive producer Michael Green, the script looks promising.

Production details are still sparse, but what is confirmed is that the series will consist of ten episodes, starring Jonathan van Tulleken – known for his work on Shogunthe Emmy-winning and Golden Globe-nominated series from 2025 – the first two are set to be directed. Scott will serve as executive producer, signaling his commitment to maintaining the tone and aesthetic of the original films, suggesting the series wants to stay true to that Blade Runner Universe. Scott has also shared that much of the inspiration for the series comes from Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave new world.

The cast will include new characters, but there’s a chance the project will feature brief appearances by familiar faces through flashbacks. However, it is worth noting that this is not certain. In addition to Oscar winners Yeoh and Schafer, the cast includes Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Tom Burke, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham and Maurizio Lombardi.

Blade Runner 2099 is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2025.
