The news many fans of a certain blue dog have been waiting for is here.

A film based on the popular children’s animated series “Bluey” is coming to theaters. An announcement was made on social media on Tuesday, tagging BBC Studios, Disney, Disney+ and ABC.

Series creator Joe Brumm posted a letter on the series’ website, writing that he had “some good news, some difficult” news.

“Let’s start with the good – after spending some time away from the series and working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I had written a script for the Bluey feature, which I really love,” he wrote. “Fast forward through a bunch of contracts and we’re about to make an animated Bluey movie!”

The “difficult” news was his decision to step away from the television series, he wrote.

“I always said that if I thought I couldn’t make a new season as good as the last one, I wouldn’t do the show anymore,” Brumm wrote. “This would have been the case for me in a possible fourth season, so I decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event that I can’t manage to do more seasons myself, The Sign will be my TV finale for Bluey, and I wrote it as such.”

He also commented on the film in a press release.

“I really enjoyed working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going further with a feature film feels like a natural extension,” said Brumm. “I always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a feature film. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together.”

Vocal talent from series including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack will be part of the film, along with music by “Bluey” composer Joff Bush.

The project is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2027 and will air on ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia following its theatrical release.
