Bob Dylan’s catalog is on the rise as his biopic A Complete Unknown hits theaters

After months of publicity and teases, this is a Bob Dylan biopic A complete unknown has finally arrived in cinemas worldwide. The film, which stars Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet as a singer-songwriter, has attracted fans of both the talented film star and the musician. Not only did they flock to see the film, but they also flocked to online platforms where Dylan’s music is once again growing in popularity.

As of Friday morning (December 27), Dylan’s name has been all over the iTunes charts in the US. He doesn’t need help selling music, and he never really has, but this moment is special because his catalog is back in the spotlight in an important way. Americans are once again buying both his albums and some of his most famous songs.

On the US iTunes album charts, which usually show fairly clearly which albums and EPs the country is buying at any given time, Dylan takes eight spots on the 200-spot list. He even manages to achieve two top 10 placements and, at the time of writing, he is the only name to appear in this top ranking with more than one project.

Dylan’s highest-charting album on iTunes in the US is The Essential Bob Dylan (Revised Edition)which jumps several notches to number 5 and settles in the top 10. He comes just a few places further down, in 9th place Highway 61 revised. This bestselling and critically acclaimed work climbs several dozen steps to find its way into the special arena.

The rocker also sees his popular releases Bob Dylan’s greatest hits (No. 15), Bob Dylan on the loose (No. 60), Blood on the tracks (No. 81), Blonde on blonde (No. 91), Bring everything home (No. 157) and The times in which they change (No. 163). Some of these albums are returning to the iTunes charts, while others were already there when they entered the chart around the film’s release.

Dylan doesn’t do quite as well in the song rankings, although he still manages to take several spots in the most accessed rankings on iTunes. The legend includes five rungs, although two of them are actually the same single, as slightly different versions are both currently selling well in the USA.

“Like a Rolling Stone” comes in at number 41 and is currently Dylan’s biggest hit – at least on iTunes in America. The same track, which in many ways remains perhaps the guitarist’s most successful, is also at number 87.

The focus of A complete unknown also appears on the iTunes charts with “The Times They Are A-Changin'” (No. 76), “Blowin’ In the Wind” (No. 77) and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” (No. 93). These positions – and the number of victories he achieves thanks to the film – are likely to change in the coming days. Thanks to the anticipation surrounding the film, Dylan could be on track to return to the charts in several Western markets in a few days.
