Popular baseball broadcaster and actor Bob Uecker, who parlayed an unremarkable playing career into a decades-long stint behind the microphone and in front of the camera, died Thursday, officials said.

He was 90.

“It is with broken hearts that we announce that Brewers icon and Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Uecker passed away today at the age of 90,” the Milwaukee Brewers said.

He was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in early 2023, relatives said.

“Even in the face of this challenge, his enthusiasm for life was always present and never let his spirit falter,” a family statement said.

Uecker had been a fixture behind the microphone in Milwaukee since 1971, although he had shortened his full-time 162-game schedule in recent years.

In addition to his half-century in a baseball press box, Uecker made a mark with his memorable acting roles in the 1989 film “Major League” and the sitcom “Mr. Belvedere” also left its mark on comedy at the end of the 1980s.

His deadpan call after a pitch thrown wildly off the plate by Charlie Sheen’s character Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn – “Juuuust a bit out” – remains a favorite one-line joke for numerous baseball fans.

Uecker’s wry, understated wit was on full display in a famous Miller Lite beer commercial in 1984, when he sat down at a baseball stadium.

When an usher told him, “You’re sitting in the wrong seat, buddy, come on,” Uecker famously replied, “I have to be in the front row” — before ending up in the farthest reaches of the upper deck.

That is a Development Story. Please check back for updates.
