Boilers win Rady Children's Invitational

SAN DIEGO – Purdue Basketball can add an exciting ending to its list of valuable early-season experiences.

Myles Colvin’s defense of a Braden Smith miss with less than a second to play gave the Boilermakers an 80-78 victory over Ole Miss in the Rady Children’s Invitational championship.

Purdue won its fourth straight championship to start the season and its ninth straight game in these events.

At one point it seemed as if the No. 12 Boilermakers were headed for another championship. They led by as many as 17 points in the first half while Ole Miss hit a series of failed three-pointers.

However, the 24th-placed Rebels found their form, scoring 9 from 11 and six in a row to bridge the two halves.

The Boilermakers remained scoreless for nearly five minutes until midway through the second half. Ole Miss used this drought to make its move. The Rebels played harder in a crucial period and Dre Davis’ two free throws with 12:10 left gave them their first lead, 59-58.

Then Jaemyn Brakefield took the lead for a while, hitting a deep three-pointer, driving an and-one layup, hitting a cross-court pass and rushing in for a dunk. Ole Miss led 67-60 with 9:12 left.

Turning point in Purdue basketball

Fletcher Loyer hit a 3 to cut Ole Miss’ lead to 75-74 with less than four minutes to play. On the ensuing possession, Myles Colvin secured a turnover and cashed it in for a layup while also drawing a foul.

After a defensive stop, Braden Smith drove the lane for a layup and a 78-75 lead.

Colvin’s early spark

Purdue took an 8-0 lead and Colvin turned the ignition key. He converted a steal into a layup on the game’s first possession and then capped the Boilers’ first offensive set with a 3.

He collected five points, two rebounds and a steal in the first two minutes. Also had another 3-pointer and blocked a shot early.

Colvin laid the foundation, then shots from Loyer and Smith helped push the lead to 17 in the first half.

Colvin also provided a spark early in the second half, hitting a 3 and firing a backdoor cut.

Braden Smith, Purdue: Came into the game having made six of his last 22 field goals in three games, with two spine-tingling 11-point performances. Came to life midway through the first half, scoring nine straight points with three 3-pointers and forcing an Ole Miss timeout. He finished the game with 18 points, 11 assists and six rebounds.

Trey Kaufman Renn: When he exited late in the first half, he received a well-deserved ovation from the mostly Purdue-friendly crowd. When Ole Miss’ perimeter shooting finally got hot, Smith continued to feed Kaufman-Renn in the paint. But he has also made a big impression with his passing and continues to work on becoming a stronger rebounding presence. He led the Boilers with 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Myles Colvin, Purdue: In addition to the winning goal, Colvin scored a total of 20 points, made 3 of 5 from 3-point range and provided a defensive boost with two steals. His work at the start of both halves was crucial – although it wasn’t as crucial as his play in the final seconds.
