Bombs gone: Suns and Jazz set NBA record for 3-pointers in game in Phoenix win

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns appear to have been working on their shots during their long layoffs. Or maybe they just got their legs back.

Be that as it may, the packed Delta Center was rewarded with spectacular footage on Friday.

Lauri Markkanen had a crossover stepback 3-pointer against Kevin Durant. Jordan Clarkson hit a buzzer-beater at the end of the first half. And Devin Booker had six shots of his own, including the biggest shot of the night.

With 1:45 minutes left in the game, Booker hit a triple over the outstretched hand of Walker Kessler, helping the Suns to a 134-126 Jazz victory.

In the end, the two teams combined for 44 3-point shots, which is an NBA record. And it should have been clear in the first few minutes that the teams were in for a big offensive night.

Utah started the game with consecutive 3-pointers from Kessler. Not only were they his first two triples this season, they were also his first two attempts.

From there, everyone else came into play.

Clarkson, returning after missing the last seven games, had 23 points and was 4 of 6 from 3-point range. John Collins had 22 points and also made four triples. Markkanen had 19 points and shot 4 of 7 from distance.

The problem: The Suns were just as good.

Booker had 34 points and Durant added 30 points to help Phoenix win the offensive exhibition.

“Tonight underlines, if nothing else, the skills in the NBA today,” said Jazz coach Will Hardy. “It was a pretty strong shooting performance from both teams. … Both groups shot a lot tonight.”
