Bondi claps back at Hirono on questions about political prosecutions: ‘Refused to meet me’

Pam Bondi, President-elect Trump’s nominee for attorney general, had a tense exchange with Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono during her confirmation hearing Wednesday, drawing praise from conservatives on social media.

“You have a new president who said, ‘I have the absolute right to do whatever I want with the Justice Department,’ and in fact President-elect Trump views the DOJ as his law firm,” the Hawaii senator said after Bondi on Wednesday . “I ask you this: If President-elect Trump asked, suggested or implied that you, as attorney general, investigate one of his perceived political enemies, would you do it?”

“Senator Hirono, I wish you had met me. If you had met with me, we would have discussed many things and…” Bondi began to answer.

Hirono then interrupted him saying, “I’m listening to you now. Could you please answer the question?”

“You were the only one who refused to meet me, but we would have discussed it being the attorney general’s job,” Bondie said before being interrupted again by Hirono.

“I very much look forward to hearing your answers under oath, Miss Bondi,” Hirono said.

“That’s why I think it’s really important to us that the attorney general is independent of the White House and that you have a president-elect who views the attorney general’s office as his law firm. I would like to know if the President is making any suggestions, tips or questions that you, as Attorney General, should investigate one of his perceived enemies.”

Bondi replied: “I certainly haven’t heard that from the president. But what I can tell you is that two-thirds of Americans have lost faith in the Justice Department, and I believe that statements like that will cause people to continue to lose faith.”

Conservatives on social media praised Bondi for her handling of Hirono’s questions.
