Thanks to goals from Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo, Bournemouth beat Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League at chilly Old Trafford on Sunday to climb to fifth place in the table.

Bournemouth’s fourth league win in five games took them to 28 points after 17 games, while United sit 13th on 22 points and will spend Christmas in the bottom half of the table for the first time in Premier League history.

“I always say that in a situation like this we have to show personality and character,” said United defender Lisandro Martínez. “We are playing so well and unfortunately we couldn’t score a goal today. We have to believe in it. At this club we have to win every game and we know that.”

Huijsen got the visitors on the scoresheet when he beat Joshua Zirkzee and headed home Ryan Christie’s free kick in the 29th minute. United have struggled from set pieces, conceding two goals from corners against Arsenal and one against Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

While United peppered Bournemouth with shots towards the end of the first half, including three from captain Bruno Fernandes, it was the visitors who decided the game with two goals in two minutes at the start of the second half.

Kluivert scored a penalty in the 61st minute, which was awarded after Noussair Mazraoui brought down the Dutch winger and sent goalkeeper André Onana the wrong way.

The excited Bournemouth fans were still cheering when Dango Ouattara played a pass to Semenyo in the penalty area two minutes later. United defender Martínez offered little resistance as Semenyo fired a hard shot past Onana.

“It’s an important win for us,” said Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola. “We won 3-0, but it was more difficult than it looks at 3-0. I think we were pretty solid, it was a mature performance.”

Bournemouth fans cheerfully sang “Man United, it’s happened again” in the final minutes, referencing their win by the same result at Old Trafford last season.

“Feels great, two wins in a row at Old Trafford,” Semenyo said. “We know we have a good team and we are taking it game by game. I won’t say too much and I don’t want to jinx it.”

United looked out of sorts at both ends of the pitch for much of the game, which came after their comfortable 2-1 derby win over Manchester City a week earlier.

“It’s hard to push for two or three wins and we’re trying,” United coach Ruben Amorim said. “This game was tough for us. We suffered again from set pieces and were a bit nervous, I could feel that in the stadium. The penalty and another goal are really tough here. We tried to score a few goals but it was a tough game. “So let’s move on.

“We have to concentrate on the work and not on what you feel in the stadium. This is the only way I know how to focus my players. We have to suffer again, but we will try to win. We will make it to the end.”

United had 23 shots compared to Bournemouth’s 10, including the whirlwind just before half-time in which Fernandes fired a rocket from the top of the 18-yard box that sailed just wide of the net. Seconds later, Kobbie Mainoo beat three defenders before firing just wide of the post.

Alejandro Garnacho missed a great chance in the second half when he got past two defenders and then shot at goalkeeper Kepa.

Amorim has left striker Marcus Rashford out of his squad for the third consecutive season amid rumors his time at the club could be limited.

The 27-year-old striker, who was at the stadium on Sunday but not on the bench, appears to have fallen out of favor and said in an interview earlier this week that he was ready for a “new challenge” away from the club.
