Professional boxer Paul Bamba died at the age of 35.

Bamba was led by the singer Ne-Yowho confirmed his death on Friday, December 27, in a joint statement with the athlete’s family.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement said. “He was a passionate but confident competitor with a relentless ambition to achieve greatness. But above all, he was a great human being who inspired many with his extraordinary drive and determination.”

The note concluded: “We are heartbroken by his death and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we deal with our grief together.”

Ne-Yo, 45, shared the same statement on his Instagram Story Nipsey Hussleis “Victory Lap.”

Bamba signed a contract with Ne-Yo’s management company in November. It was the musician’s first foray into the boxing ring.

“To be completely honest? Just believe in the fighter,” the “Miss Independent” singer told NBC News last month about the career move. “Once I realized where I could help him, where he could help me, it all made sense. Ne-Yo, in particular, was inspired by Bamba’s “drive and dedication to a cause.”

Six days before Bamba’s sudden death – a cause of death was not confirmed – he was crowned WBA gold cruiserweight champion after a fight against Bamba Rogelio Medina.
