The opening day of the fourth test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia set the record for the highest attendance in a game between these two teams Down Under. With 87,242 people coming through the gates, it was the record for a day of Test cricket between Australia and India in Australia.
The large crowd met the expectations of the stadium’s CEO, Stuart Fox. In voting on the Boxing Day Test He had expected 2,50,000 fans to attend within four to five days.

MCG CEO Stuart Fox: “We’ll get well over 2,50,000 through the gates”

With temperatures of 35-39 degrees throughout, Australia opted to bat after winning the toss and ended the day on 311/6. There was plenty to cheer and celebrate for the local crowd, including Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith.
Test debutant Konstas got the ball rolling with a blistering 52-ball fifth that also included two sixes off Jasprit Bumrah and a heated exchange with Virat Kohli.
Australia’s top-order kept up the run-scoring with Khawaja breaking a dry spell with the bat to score 57 runs. However, he would consider himself unlucky if he failed against Bumrah.
Labuschagne (72) also looked good but failed to convert his score into three figures as he was sent off by Washington Sundar.
Smith (68*) and Pat Cummins (8*) took Australia to safety at stumps, with Bumrah once again leading the way in taking wickets, taking figures of 3/75.
