Tampa Bay Lightning star Brayden Point bizarrely scored the fifth hat trick of his NHL career in his team’s 5-4 loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

Point got its third goal of the game at Amalie Arena when Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren tried to pass the puck behind him but instead shot it into his own net. The mistake didn’t prove costly, however, as Tom Wilson gave the Caps the lead with a power play goal late in the third period.

“I kind of laughed to myself,” Lindgren told reporters after the game. “It was obviously the worst mark I’ve ever made on ice… I don’t know what I was thinking. The boys picked me up and I have a lot of respect for them.”

Lindgren continued to play a crucial role in the Caps’ win, making every save after his faux pas midway through the third frame and finishing with a total of 25 saves.

“Mistakes happen in the game,” Point said. “He kind of managed it, but down the stretch he made some great saves.”

Tampa Bay had led most of the game behind Point’s early goals and one from Michael Eyssimont, but Andrew Mangiapane, Aliaksei Protas and Dylan Strome all scored for the Capitals.

With the score tied at 3-3, Point’s hat trick gave the Lightning the lead before John Carlson and Wilson gave the Capitals the lead. They have a record of 15-6-1 this season, while the Lightning have a record of 11-8-2.

“I thought both teams probably deserved a point tonight…everything was pretty even,” Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper, coaching his 900th NHL game, told reporters afterward.
