Robert Lewandowski’s early penalty against Brest at the Montjuic Stadium last night saw him reach a historic milestone as he became only the third player in the game’s history to score 100 goals in the UEFA Champions League.

The Polish striker is now only the third player to feature on this list after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and even scored his 101st goal in the competition later in the evening.

A breakdown of the target distribution

Of the 101 goals Lewandowski scored in the competition, 69 came in the event’s group stage and the remaining 32 came in the knockout stage.

Of these, 19 were in the round of 16, six in the quarter-finals and seven in the semi-finals. Remarkably, Lewandowski has never scored in a UEFA Champions League final.

A year-by-year breakdown of his goal distribution also provides valuable insight into the player’s consistency over the years.

Lewandowski scored once in the competition in the 2011/12 season, but then came back to life with ten goals in the 2012/13 season.

He maintained his consistency over the next five seasons, scoring 6, 6, 9, 8 and 5 goals respectively.

He scored eight goals in the 2018/19 season before scoring an impressive 15 goals in Bayern Munich’s winning streak in the UEFA Champions League in the 2019/20 season. In his final two seasons at Bayern Munich, he scored five and 13 goals in the competition respectively.

Lewy moved to Barcelona in 2022/23, where he scored five goals in the European Cup and scored three goals again last season. He is on fire again this season with seven goals in just five games so far.

Remarkably, the striker has scored 22 of his 101 goals under Hansi Flick and it is clear that he is thriving under the German tactician. In fact, he has not scored more goals in the competition under any other coach, even under Jürgen Klopp his tally was 17 goals.
