BREAKING: The Badgers’ former starting QB enters the transfer portal

According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is entering a major step in the transfer portal.

Van Dyke, a graduate transfer who transferred to Wisconsin last offseason, lost the season after just three games, suffering a torn ACL in the first quarter against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

This led to redshirt sophomore Braedyn Locke taking over the reins for the remainder of the season and the Badgers posting an overall record of 5-7.

There were a number of quarterback questions for the Badgers early in the offseason following the firing of offensive coordinator Phil Longo, who was directly involved in recruiting every signal-caller in the room.

However, 2025 three-star quarterback Landyn Locke stuck to his commitment and signed with the Badgers, while his older brother Braedyn Locke is expected to remain at Wisconsin.

Van Dyke’s future was uncertain as head coach Luke Fickell mentioned he would soon speak with the graduate transfer on National Signing Day. Now it’s clear that Van Dyke will have a different goal for his final season of college football.

With Van Dyke’s departure, the Badgers currently have four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for the 2025 season: Braedyn Locke, Mabrey Mettauer, Carter Smith and Landyn Locke.

There is also a growing expectation that Wisconsin will look in the transfer portal for a quarterback, potentially rounding out the offer as that move could come any time the Badgers want to finalize the hiring of their quarterbacks coach.

So the Badgers’ quarterback room doesn’t appear to be ready yet, but there was a major domino effect on Monday when Van Dyke entered the transfer portal.
