Brian Thompson Shooting Updates: Luigi Mangione has been identified as the person involved in the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO

Police name man involved in CEO murder

A man being questioned in Pennsylvania in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, New York police said Monday.

Mangione was identified at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a patron of the fast-food outlet apparently recognized him from images circulated by the NYPD following last week’s shooting and alerted police.

He carried a ghost gun, a silencer, “several fake IDs,” including one the NYPD believes was used by the shooter, and a handwritten, three-page manifesto criticizing the health care system. Authorities also recovered clothing and masks consistent with those seen in the suspect’s photos.

Mangione was arrested on firearms charges but was not charged in the fatal shooting of the CEO outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan last Wednesday. However, he is considered to have a “strong interest in the shooting that rocked our city,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference Monday

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said it was a “combination of old-school detective work and new-age technology” that helped lead police to Mangione, who has ties to Maryland, California and Hawaii and no arrest record has, said the police.

The arrest comes as a private funeral is scheduled to take place Monday for Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO who was shot last week as he arrived at the hotel for an investor conference.

UnitedHealthcare spokesperson releases statement

“We hope today’s concern brings relief to Brian’s family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy,” the statement said.

“We thank law enforcement and will continue to cooperate with them in this investigation. We ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.”

The Person of Interest gave The Unabomber’s Manifesto four stars on Goodreads

The person of interest in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson apparently gave a positive review of the Unabomber’s manifesto online earlier this year, praising the killer as a “political revolutionary.”

Police on Monday called Luigi Mangione a “strong person of interest” after taking him into custody in connection with the murder.

An account under that name on the book review website Goodreads, which also matches photos of the suspect on other social media platforms, gave Ted Kaczynski’s book four stars in January.

“It had to be done”

A document was found on the person in question, said NYPD Chief Detective Joseph Kenny on Monday.

It reportedly criticized the healthcare industry and said “it had to be done,” allegedly referring to the killing of a top healthcare executive, a law enforcement official told CNN.

“These parasites had it coming” and “I apologize for the hassle and trauma, but it had to be done,” the document read.

He was also found to be acting alone and self-financing.

Kenny said the document is currently in the possession of Altoona police.

“We do not believe there are specific threats to anyone else mentioned in this document, but it appears that he has some antipathy toward the American economy,” he added.
