A British citizen killed in the Bourbon Street attacks on New Year’s Day had ties to the royal family, according to a BBC report.

Edward Pettifer, 31, was visiting New Orleans on New Year’s Eve when he was killed by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, after the attacker sped down a busy French Quarter street in what the FBI described as a “terrorist attack.”

He is the stepson of Alexandra Pettifer, a woman who looked after Prince William and Prince Harry as children, British media said. The Telegraph, another British media source, said she served as a nanny to the princes from 1993 to 1999 and still has a close relationship with them.

King Charles has reportedly personally contacted Pettifer’s family to express his condolences. Prince William, the Prince of Wales, was also informed of the death of his former nanny’s son.

William and his wife Catherine released a statement on social media on Saturday mourning the loss of Pettifer.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all the innocent people who were tragically affected by this horrific attack,” the statement said.

Pettifer was one of 14 people who died from blunt force injuries in the attack. On Friday, the coroner’s office released a full list of victims who died in the mass accident.

His family described him as “a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to so many.”

“We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who lost family members in this horrific attack. We ask that as a family we be able to grieve the loss of Ed privately,” the statement said.

Britain’s Metropolitan Police, London’s police force, said it was supporting the family following the death of their son.
