Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan react to social media posts from Deebo Samuel – NBC Sports Bay Area and California

Brock Purdy believes Deebo Samuel is an important part of the 49ers’ offense and wants to get him more involved this season.

The San Francisco quarterback addressed Samuel’s viral social media posts about not getting enough of the ball.

“Deebo and I talk all the time and he’s one of my best friends on the team,” Purdy told reporters Tuesday. “I love Deebo and what he has done for me and what he helps me. I think he’s right. With what we’re asking him to do offensively, he’s doing great right now, he’s not having any issues or anything like that.

“As the season progresses, there are moments when the boys just can’t get the ball. Just depends on the scheme or the defensive scheme. So I want to get Deebo the ball, I want him to break all sorts of records, and I want Deebo to do Deebo things. I love my husband and will do everything I can to get him the ball.”

The 28-year-old struggled to make the explosive plays that were once his calling card. With just two touchdowns and 645 yards from offense this season, it’s the worst start in 12 games of his career. It’s not entirely his fault either, as San Francisco’s offense has been decimated by injuries and subpar play throughout the season.

Coach Kyle Shanahan also didn’t put too much emphasis on the posts and pointed to his close relationship with Samuel

“Yeah, we always love when things stay internal, that’s probably why I don’t mess with social media,” Shanahan said. “I’m sure I’d be upset too if I kept reading things about myself. I would maybe do a tweet or something. Is it a distraction in our building? NO.

“The first time I talked about this is right here. Deebo and I see each other every day and talk about things every day. It’s water under the bridge.”

The recipient also responded to the posts and was blunt in his comments.

“You read what you read,” Samuel told reporters. “Definitely a little frustrated.”

For an offense that requires more consistent production, getting Samuel more involved is crucial. With the 49ers likely needing to win to make the playoffs, Purdy, Samuel and the rest of the offense will need to be firing on all cylinders.

Now the team has a quick turnaround before hosting the Los Angeles Rams in a crucial NFC West showdown on “Thursday Night Football.”
