Brock Purdy has a bruised elbow and is likely out of the 49ers’ final game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After another injury to his right elbow, quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday.

Additional testing on Purdy’s elbow, which he injured in Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions, revealed no structural damage and there are no long-term concerns with Purdy’s elbow.

“(It’s a) right elbow contusion with neuritis,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “(He) will most likely miss this week but there are no long-term issues. UCL looks good.”

With Purdy expected to miss the Niners’ season finale against the Arizona Cardinals, Shanahan said Tuesday that he will choose between Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen for Sunday’s starter.

Dobbs backed up Purdy on Monday night, but Allen started in Purdy’s place in the only game he missed earlier this season against the Green Bay Packers. Purdy suffered a shoulder injury this week.

While Purdy’s season is coming to an early end, Shanahan was thankful the elbow injury is not serious.

“I’m relieved, but based on the information we had last night, I wasn’t too worried about it, so it was good to just hear the same thing today,” Shanahan said.

Purdy suffered the injury Monday night with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter when he took a shotgun blast and scanned the field before attempting to escape to the right. Lions safety Brian Branch pursued Purdy, wrapped him up and pulled him down for a sack.

As Purdy turned, Lions defensive end Pat O’Connor landed on top of him, hitting Purdy’s elbow with his hand and then his facemask. Purdy was slow to get back up and then walked to the sideline as Dobbs entered the play.

As Purdy reached the sideline, he chatted with doctors and training staff who examined his right hand, wrist and arm. He attempted a few throws but couldn’t regain the strength in his elbow and didn’t come back.

After the game, Purdy said his elbow felt “heavy in a way” and his arm was “on fire” after O’Connor hit him.

Purdy admitted that he was initially concerned that it was a similar injury to the ulnar collateral ligament tear he suffered in the 2023 NFC Championship Game, but that some quick tests on the sidelines quickly ruled out ligament damage.

“We’ve done some testing with UCL stuff and I’m good on that end,” Purdy said on Monday night. “But we’ll just have to take pictures of it tomorrow and see the whole thing.”

After the loss to the Lions, Purdy made it clear that if he was healthy, he wanted to play in Sunday’s season finale against the Cardinals. While it seems unlikely now, it gives Purdy a chance to rest and prepare for an important offseason for him and the team.

With this being the end of his third season, Purdy will be eligible for a contract extension for the first time in his young career after Sunday’s game at Arizona.

Purdy finished the season with 3,864 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while aiming for five more scores. He ranks seventh in the NFL in QBR (67.8) and third in yards per attempt (8.5).

“I think he aced this year,” Shanahan said. “He didn’t run away from anything. He attacked everything, played as hard as he could and worked as hard as he could. Come Mondays and Tuesdays and face the truth above all else and strive and try to get better every week.”

Shanahan said he will decide later Tuesday afternoon who will start in Purdy’s place.
