Brock Purdy injury: 49ers QB leaves game after hard hit and is replaced by Josh Dobbs

Brock Purdy was injured in the final minutes of Monday Night Football against the Detroit Lions.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback was sacked by the Lions defensive back Brian Branch on the piece. Purdy appeared to land hard on his wrist or arm after the hit and was seen on the sideline attempting a throw before the team shut him down for the rest of the night.

Josh Dobbs replaced him at quarterback for the rest of the drive and didn’t miss the opportunity. The former Tennessee quarterback completed 3 of 4 passes for 35 yards and reached the end zone with a lone seven-yard run to cut the lead to six points before the end of regulation.

While the severity of Purdy’s injury is unknown at the time of this report, Purdy had a career night with 377 yards and three touchdowns despite throwing two interceptions during Monday night’s matchup.

With the 49ers having fallen to 6-10 and eliminated from the playoffs, it remains to be seen whether San Francisco opts to start Dobbs instead of Purdy in the season finale on the road against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, January 5 . Kickoff for this match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.

If he finishes the year, he will have finished the year with 3,487 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also scored four touchdowns on the ground during the regular season – including one against the Lions on Monday, bringing his total to four touchdowns before the injury forced him out of the game late.

Having played in 14 games so far this season, Purdy will not reach his 2023 numbers even if he plays in Week 18. Last year, he threw for over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions, a total he has nearly mirrored over two fewer regular-season games in 2024.

Looking ahead to the offseason, the 49ers will look to stay healthy and put themselves in a position to compete for a Super Bowl again.

A more pressing question remains to be seen whether the team will pay Purdy this offseason or wait, as the top of the quarterback market becomes more and more expensive with each offseason.
