Detroit Lions defensive tackle Chris Smith (90) and defensive end Za’Darius Smith (99) tackle San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) during the first half at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Monday, December 30, 2024 .

Another bad night for the San Francisco 49ers got worse late in their Monday night game against the Detroit Lions.

Quarterback Brock Purdy was hit in the blind side by Lions safety Brian Branch and immediately left the game. Apparently his hand or wrist was treated on the sidelines. On the television broadcast, he was seen making a few soft throws on the sideline before giving up his helmet.

This is a nightmare scenario for Purdy and the 49ers.

The QB left the game with less than two minutes left and the 49ers trailed by 12 points. Joshua Dobbs, the backup signal-caller for Monday night, exited the contest.

It’s unclear what Purdy’s injury was, but the fact that he made no real attempt to throw the ball while on the sideline was reminiscent of the 2022 NFC Championship Game, when Purdy suffered a torn ACL in the offseason had to be operated on.

Purdy is due for a contract extension once the 2024 regular season ends. Therefore, his injury could have far-reaching implications that extend well beyond the 2024 season.

We will keep a close eye on any updates regarding Purdy’s throwing arm/hand.
