Broncos’ Pat Surtain II suffers ankle injury in win over Colts

A big win came with a potentially big loss Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High after Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II suffered an ankle injury on a fourth-quarter interception return.

The injury occurred after Surtain knocked out quarterback Anthony Richardson in the final minutes of Denver’s 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts. He was hit in the lower body by wide receiver Josh Downs as he tried to run upfield with the ball.

The team captain was listed as questionable, but came back on the following defensive possession. Surtain went down again after attempting to tackle running back Trey Sermon. Trainers helped him off the field and then went to the locker room.

Sean Payton did not comment on the severity of the injury after the game. The Broncos’ head coach said there were no discussions about sidelining Surtain after the initial injury. Medical staff gave him the green light to resume play.

The Broncos did not make Surtain available for comment in the locker room because he did not finish the game.

Denver’s cornerback definition has been plagued by injuries in recent weeks. Starting cornerback Riley Moss missed his second straight game on Sunday due to an MCL injury he suffered in Denver’s win over the Raiders last month.

Moss hasn’t practiced in two weeks.

In addition to Surtain’s injury, starting defensive tackle DJ Jones left the game in the fourth quarter with a finger injury. The timing of both injuries isn’t ideal considering Denver will have a short week of practice before its Thursday Night Football matchup at the Los Angeles Chargers. Right defenseman Quinn Meinerz also injured his shoulder late in the third quarter and was listed as questionable before returning to the field.

Running back Jaleel McLaughlin suffered a quadriceps injury after being hit on a 2-yard reception with six minutes left in the third quarter. He never returned to the game and was seen on an exercise bike in the fourth quarter.

Surtain missed the Broncos’ first game Thursday night in New Orleans after suffering a concussion four days earlier in a Week 6 loss to the Chargers.
