Broncos promote DE Matt Henningsen and RB Blake Watson for “Thursday Night Football” against the Chargers

LOS ANGELES – The Broncos have added two players to their gameday roster for a Thursday Night Football matchup with the Chargers.

Denver has elevated defensive end Matt Henningsen and running back Blake Watson from the practice squad to the active roster for Thursday’s game in Los Angeles, the team announced.

Henningsen has yet to play in a game for the Broncos this season, but he played in 34 games in 2022-23 after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In each of those two seasons, he played 20 percent of Denver’s defensive snaps while also playing nearly 40 percent of the team’s special teams snaps. He has recorded 40 tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, one sack and two passes defensed in his career.

Watson, an undrafted rookie out of Memphis, was active in the Broncos’ Week 5 win over the Raiders, playing two snaps. He has yet to receive a carry in his young NFL career. Watson, a member of the Broncos’ first active roster, ran for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 6.0 yards per carry in his final college season.

Denver’s promotion of Watson comes after running back Jaleel McLaughlin was ruled out on Wednesday.

The Broncos are scheduled to face the Chargers at SoFi Stadium at 6:15 p.m. MT.
