Brooklyn Nets vs. Miami Heat Preview: The Nets head south for the holidays

A cold, rough day at the office. The Brooklyn Nets hosted the Utah Jazz on a snowy Saturday evening in Brooklyn. It was a chaotic game as the Nets committed 19 turnovers en route to an 11-point home loss.

The Miami Heat are doing poorly right now. They blew a 25-point lead and scored just eight points in the fourth quarter, resulting in a disheartening loss to the injury-plagued Orlando Magic on Saturday night. The L was Miami’s third straight team and they are now 13-13 on the season.

Injuries

No Cam Thomas, Bojan Bogdanovic, Ziaire Williams, Trenton Watford or DeAnthony Melton. Dorian Finney-Smith is suspected of having a bruised left calf. But maybe we’ll see Dariq Whitehead and Jaylen Martin. Both played on Long Island but are considered questionable for Brooklyn. The two played in Orlando on Sunday.

Josh Richardson is out with right heel inflammation. It is questionable whether Jimmy Butler suffers from a stomach disorder.

The game

So Ben Simmons had his best game in a long time, including that rarity

10/15/6? Very good! A season-high six turnovers? VERY BAD! Jordi Fernandez praised Ben’s aggressiveness and the Nets need him to replicate that in every game if they want to compete. Lucas Kaplan and Sarah Kustok talked about this in the latest issue of The backcourt Podcast

Simmons has the talent. It’s just a matter of putting together a consistent run so he can show his skills.

Nic Claxton will have a tough fight ahead of him tonight. Bam Adebayo is the key to Miami’s season and they need All-Star games if they want to save their season. Adebayo can do a little bit of everything, as he can direct the offense, find his teammates for good looks at the rim, and score in the midfield. He shoots almost three three-pointers a night and is shooting just 31.1 percent. It’s all about finding quality shots, and if you’re not hitting certain shots, you need to find your way to better ones.

But Bam’s calling card is his defense. He has been in the top five for Defensive Player of the Year five years in a row and has also made the All-Defensive teams each season. For Claxton, he needs to have success at the rim and get Bam to work hard on that side of the ball. Nic has a busy midweek ahead of him. If that game ends, he’ll have to deal with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday before a showdown with Victor Wembanyama on Friday night. For Claxton, games like these are a big test and the further he gets from his back injury, the more he can look like he used to.

Player to Watch: Tyler Herro

It’s always fun to see a young player grow into a leader. Since Miami’s miraculous run to the 2023 NBA Finals, Herro has gradually taken over the reins of Miami’s offense. He led the team in usage percentage the last two seasons and is the player Erik Spoelstra turns to when he needs a basket late

Herro is in the top 20 in scoring and is shooting a career-high 40.6% from 3-point range on 10 attempts per game. With Jimmy Butler’s status in Miami uncertain, Herro’s first-round pick will help Miami stay afloat and secure a playoff spot.

Speaking of the main option, Cam Johnson is getting used to being number one. CJ hit the peak of his career six times when the Jazz made him the center of attention.
