Bruins get breakout performance from Eric Dailey Jr. in win

The No. 22 UCLA Bruins (11-2) cruised to a 65-62 victory over the No. 14 Gonzaga Bulldogs (9-4) at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, California on Saturday night. Sophomore guard Eric Dailey Jr. scored a team-high 18 points and is considered one of the best players in the country.

After suffering a gunshot to the face in last weekend’s loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels, Dailey had to wear a clear face mask to protect his facial bones. He may want to play with it more often, as he knocked down four of his five 3-point attempts and also added four free throws.

“It felt different,” Dailey said of the protective face mask as he addressed the media after the game. “But no, I worked for hours in the gym just to find the rim and put the ball in the basket. It’s the same goal every day, so it wasn’t too bad.”

Dailey was just one point shy of his season-high of 19, which he scored in the Bruins’ upset win over No. 12 Oregon in early December. The Oklahoma State transfer showed up when the lights were brightest, playing his best games against the best teams.

In 13 games this season, Dailey has scored in double figures eight times and continues to be a force on both sides of the ball. He is shooting 55% from the field and 42% from 3-point range while also averaging 4.5 rebounds per game with just over one steal per game.

Based on what he’s captured on tape through the first two months of the season, Dailey is among the best players in the country as a versatile guard who can play the forward position at 6-8, 230 pounds. His ability to dominate at the rim while being a threat from deep is what makes him so dynamic.

UCLA will resume Big Ten play for the remainder of the regular season as it prepares for a road game with the Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-2) next week. Dailey has combined for 25 points and nine rebounds in his first two conference games this season and will look to stay hot.
