Business owners are hopeful after the car-free announcement during the Sundance Festival

PARK CITY, Utah – On Wednesday, Park City Police announced that Main Street will be pedestrian-only during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

“When there are a lot of people here and the sidewalks are crowded, people just tend to cross the street whenever they really want to or whenever they feel like it,” said Sam Rennert, assistant bar manager at Collie’s Sports Bar & Grill.

Businesses along Main Street told FOX 13 that Sundance is the busiest time of year for Park City.

“This first Sundance weekend there are ten times as many people on Main Street as usual, so it’s as crazy as it gets. I’m worried that this last minute week trip is already causing stress with transportation logistics around the city. “I can’t imagine how they manage to get so many people out on the streets,” said Randy Winzeler, owner of Atticus Coffee & Teahouse.

But they are clearly improving safety on busy roads, which he understands.

“That makes sense especially after New Orleans, so I understand that factor,” Winzeler said.

He explained that with limited advance notice and no traffic plans, there are a few things to consider.

“It’s going to impact us a lot and I’m really excited. I think it will hurt businesses. At this point, without seeing a traffic pattern map, I can’t imagine how they could do the loop that they normally do because everyone usually goes up Sweet Alley and down Main Change and then back out,” Winzeler said.

He shared that his company and other people had already prepared for the event, but now changes needed to be made.

“We already tell our delivery drivers and they had no idea, so we’re talking like the big companies Costco, Cisco, Nicholas, so they have no idea yet. So they already have to keep their schedules.” “And they have to change things,” Winzeler said.

A few doors down Main, at Collies Sports Bar and Grill, a manager said the decision could be a positive change.

“I think it will be a good thing. Park City traffic is always the worst. There is always rush hour traffic,” said Rennert.

He hoped for less car traffic and more foot traffic for local businesses.

“I think it will definitely be positive to see that there are not so many cars on the main street. “That could stop a lot of people from driving on the main road because they can’t drive there,” Rennert said.

Police said in the news release that their top priority is to ensure everyone can enjoy the festival in a safe and welcoming environment.
