BYU secures No. 1 recruit AJ Dybantsa behind record-setting NIL offer

The zero money apparently goes to Provo.

According to Adam Zagoria, potential 2026 No. 1 NBA draft pick AJ Dybantsa chose BYU over college basketball heavyweights Alabama, Kansas and North Carolina on Tuesday in a program-changing moment thanks to a name, image and likeness offer (NIL) of nearly $7 million, according to Adam Zagoria.

According to CBS, the “enormous” NIL package is considered record-breaking.

It’s not every day that BYU wins a recruiting battle for ESPN’s No. 1 recruit with two of the sport’s bluebloods and another rising power, but NIL changed everything.

As long as schools have money, they can compete for top names, and that’s exactly what BYU did in signing Dybantsa for what will surely be his only season before moving up to the professional ranks.

Dybantsa, a 6-foot-9 winger who plays for Utah Prep, described his game as a mix of former Rockets and Magic star Tracy McGrady and current Thunder superstar guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The Massachusetts native won the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year award last year before transferring to Utah Prep and averaged 22.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists at this year’s Peach Jam.

While the NIL certainly played a big role in his decision, the phenomenon was also an enticing factor for first-year BYU coach Kevin Young and his NBA history.

Young served as an assistant coach for the 76ers from 2016 to 2020 before moving to the Suns in 2020, where he coached Dybansta’s favorite players in Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

“I went to my visit, from the head coach to the analyst, from the analyst to the nutritionist, they’re all NBA employees, even the strength coach,” Dybantsa said Tuesday on ESPN’s “First Take” after making his decision had announced decision.

“So if it’s all about the NBA, I’m trying to get the NBA. I think it will be the best development for me.”
