Caitlin Clark received great honor because of her impact on women’s sports

In recognition of her achievements in women’s track and field, Caitlin Clark was named AP Athlete of the Year. During her debut season in the WNBA, Clark received numerous accolades on and off the court. Earlier this month, the Fever star was named TIME Magazine’s 2024 Athlete of the Year.

Clark acknowledged the athletes who came before her as her greatest inspirations as she accepted the honor. The Fever star called former WNBA player Candace Parker one of the athletes who helped her become a basketball star.

“I grew up a fan of Candace Parker and the people before me and to be honored in this way is very special and I am grateful,” Clark said. “It was a great year for women’s basketball and women’s sports.”

Clark is the fourth basketball player to receive this award, following in the footsteps of Sheryl Swoopes (1993), Rebecca Lobo (1995) and Candace Parker (2008, 2021).

Other athletes considered for the award included Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and boxer Imane Khelif. Khelif came third in the voting while Biles came second.

In 2024, Clark led Iowa to the national championship game. Despite coming up short, she became the top pick of the WNBA draft. The Fever star finished her rookie season averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists.

Clark was named rookie of the year, beating out Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese. She also became an All-Star and part of the All-WNBA First Team in her first season.
