California plane crash: 2 dead, 19 injured after a small plane crashes through the roof of the Fullerton building

FULLERTON, Calif. (KABC) — Two people were killed and 19 others injured when a small plane crashed through the roof of a building near Fullerton Municipal Airport on Thursday, police said.

Eyewitness News has learned that the pilot and his 16-year-old daughter died in the crash.

Police and firefighters responded to a furniture warehouse in the 2300 block of Raymer Avenue after the accident was reported just after 2 p.m. A four-alarm fire caused by the accident sent a thick cloud of black smoke into the air that was visible for miles.

Crews battled the fire and dozens of workers were evacuated from the building. The fire was later extinguished.

One worker said many people were scared as they fled the building.

“I’ve worked for this company for five years and a plane crashes here every day,” said witness Jerome Cruz as he pointed to the sky. “I said ‘One day it’s going to fall on our roof’ and I think today was the day.”

In an evening news conference, Michael Meacham of the Fullerton Fire Department said 19 people were treated for minor to very serious injuries. Of the 19 injured, 11 were taken to a hospital and the rest were treated at the scene and released, police said.

Surveillance camera footage showed a fiery explosion and a large cloud of black smoke as the plane appeared to dip on its side into the building. Another video from inside the burning building appeared to show a person running with his arm on fire.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was a single-engine Van’s RV-10.

Eliot Simpson, an aviation accident investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said the four-seat plane was built in 2011 and was a homemade aircraft. He added that the NTSB’s preliminary report will be available in about 14 days, while the final report will take 12 to 18 months to complete.

The plane was returning to the airport when it hit the building. According to flight tracking website FlightAware, the plane took off at 2:07 p.m. and crashed two minutes later.

“The aircraft departed from Runway 24 at Fullerton at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon, climbed straight to approximately 900 feet and a short time later the pilot requested an immediate return to the airport,” Simpson said. “The air traffic controller then cleared the pilot to land on any runway. The aircraft then appeared to make a 180 degree left turn and flew left downwind toward Runway 24 and ultimately crashed approximately 1,000 feet short of Runway 24. It crashed into a furniture building and immediately caught fire.”

The FAA and NTSB will investigate the crash.

In November, two people were injured when a small plane crashed in the area of Gilbert Street and Artesia Avenue, also near Fullerton Airport.
