Sports media industry insiders recently interviewed by Brendon Kleen of Awful Anncreasing claimed that Cam Newton 4th & 1st The podcast was “under the radar”.

But Newton’s recent comments about baseball are anything but that.

“Baseball is like a, I hate to say it, a dying sport,” Newton said. “I think baseball will be overtaken by the WNBA in 20 years. Americans don’t play baseball anymore.”

There’s a separate conversation about black Americans not playing youth baseball and why there’s a lack of representation in the major leagues, but that’s not what Newton is leading. He said bluntly: “American. “And even though he doesn’t make the same argument that he does First recording Cohort Stephen A. Newton’s hiring also conveniently ignores the wealth of American talent that dominates the game. Think Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts, Mike Trout, Kyle Tucker, Bobby Witt Jr., Chris Sale, Tarik Skubal, Zack Wheeler and Devin Williams, just to name a few.

Add in the growing popularity of the College World Series and it’s hard to argue that baseball is being eclipsed.

However, that didn’t stop Newton and his co-hosts from continuing to discuss 4th & 1st the possibility of reintroducing steroids into sport.

“I don’t know how to bring back steroids,” Newton quipped. “I’m Cam Newton and I disagree with this news.”

The message Newton endorses, however, is that he tells the truth about the nation’s national pastime.

“The question is: Who really pays attention to baseball? I pay special attention to regular season baseball,” he said.

The same argument could be made for the NBA – and we all know that Major League Baseball could – and should – shorten its 162-game schedule. However, the postseason, which Newton did not factor into his argument, saw World Series viewership hit multi-year highs, and a decisive Game 5 gave the Fall Classic its highest viewership since 2017.

And the numbers don’t lie. While the MLB regular season may come with its challenges, America is still watching when the lights are brightest, even when its people are supposedly not playing.

Whether the WNBA will surpass baseball in two decades is plausible, but it’s also a whole other discussion.
