Cam Skattebo sets ASU single-season rushing record

Cam Skattebo’s season had already made him a legend in ASU history, and he now holds the top spot in the program record books for rushing yards in a single season.

The running back entered Wednesday’s Peach Bowl matchup where Texas needed 75 yards to get past Eno Benjamin (2018).

Skattebo set the record in the third quarter with a drive that included a 33-yard scraper and chunk runs of five and six yards against a strong Texas defense. It ended with a field goal that marked ASU’s first offensive points since the game’s opening drive.

Skattebo gained 110 rushing yards in three quarters, despite early frustration as ASU fell behind 17-3 at halftime. After he broke the record, ESPN reported that he began vomiting on the sidelines and became dehydrated.

It’s only fitting that Skattebo’s outstanding season is recognized in the record books after he finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. His rise helped spark a program turnaround from 3-9 last year — when he got a real dose of quarterback snaps due to injuries — to 11-2 with a Big 12 title this year.

Who previously held the rushing records that Cam Skattebo broke?

Benjamin’s star season came in his sophomore year, where he led the Pac-12 in rushing attempts (300), yards (1,642) and touchdowns (16).

He broke Woody Green’s then-record 1,565 rushing yards (1972) with 118 rushing yards in a Las Vegas Bowl loss to Fresno State when he rushed for 77 yards for the record.

Benjamin and Skattebo each played 13 games on their way to a record.
