You never know what you’re going to see on the football field, and it was no different for the Chargers-Broncos on Thursday night.

In fact, the Chargers did something that hadn’t been done in an NFL game in 48 years.

At the end of the first half in Los Angeles’ 34-27 “Thursday Night Football” win, the Chargers’ Cameron Dicker scored a 57-yard free kick field goal, his first successful since 1976.

With time running out in the second quarter, the Chargers forced Denver to punt.

Riley Dixon sent a punt 46 yards to the Chargers’ 38-yard line, and Derius Davis called in a fair catch that looked like it would end the half with triple zeros.

However, Broncos cornerback Tremon Smith incurred a careless fair catch interference penalty that gave the Chargers 15 more yards.

And this is where things got interesting.

According to NFL rules, a team calling for a fair catch may take either a drop kick or a free kick at the grab’s location.

But in this case, with the 15-yard penalty attached, the Chargers had a chance to shoot closer to midfield than they otherwise would have.

Dicker set up the free kick without taking a snap and looked more like a kick-off. He hit the free kick, which was just two meters shy of his career mark set earlier this season.

“It was funny looking at their sideline, they were confused about what was going on,” Dicker told reporters after the game. “We talk about it every week, so it was a normal thing for us. But it’s funny to watch.”

Fittingly, Chargers kicker Ray Wersching was the last person to achieve this feat.

“TNF” analyst Kirk Herbstreit summed it up.

“(He) made history tonight,” he said.

Dicker finished the night with a perfect night, hitting two field goals and two extra points.
