Cameron Dicker on free kick FG: We talk about it every week, it was a normal thing for us

When the moment came, Cameron Dicker was prepared.

There hadn’t even been an attempted free kick field goal in the NFL since the 2019 season. But when the Broncos committed a fair catch-interference foul at the end of the second quarter, Dicker realized he would get his chance.

The Chargers’ kicker attempted the NFL’s first successful free kick field goal since 1976.

“It was funny looking at their sideline — they were confused about what was going on,” Dicker said after the game. “We talk about it every week, so it was a normal thing for us. But it’s funny to watch.”

Dicker noted that he asked the official how much time they had before executing a practice kick into the net and making the rare attempt. Dicker sent the 57-yard kick through the uprights, giving the Chargers an important three points before halftime.

Normally, the Los Angeles SWAT team discusses the fair catch kick at its Friday meeting. Dicker correctly recalled that the final attempt came from then-Carolina kicker Joey Slye during a 2019 game in London.

“We always watch it and it’s fun,” Dicker said.

Dicker noted that, aside from the opposing team being 10 yards away, the process is the same as a normal field goal.

But being prepared makes a difference, and that comes from special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken and head coach Jim Harbaugh.

“Insults and things like that don’t usually happen, so they were all confused,” Dicker said. “They asked, ‘What’s going on here?’ So that was funny to hear. And now we’ve taught a lot of people what’s going on.”

And now Dicker has done something that hasn’t been done in almost 50 years.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” Dicker said. “I didn’t know that was the case. That’s pretty cool to hear. It’s pretty awesome.”
